The serial number system (in use from 1940 to 1965, except for models in solid gold cases) is simple: the first two digits are the year of manufacture. A donor watch or a replacement dial shouldn't be hard to come by, and for a Doxa, something like $30-$40 tops (dial alone, not a donor watch).Īs to the year of production of the bigger one, it's about the serial number on the back. I'd suggest measuring out that dial and finding a replacement on eBay. That redialing it was completely unnecessary, that's not all that relevant, but it really hurts to see, that some people call themselves "restorers", do a butcher job like that to a dial, and then have the gall to have the watch owner pay for it. OK, on second thoughts, calling that restorer a baboon could have been somewhat inadequate, as a baboon would have done it better. Hope you didn't pay much to the "restorer" - or, more likely, a baboon with a paintbrush and a ballpoint pen - for having that dial turned into a catastrophe. Not to mention, that someone was far too lazy to remove the hour markers before repainting, and so they're just sinking in the paint, with splashes of it on the sides. The minute track is a joke - the blotchy markers were done with a ballpoint pen, or what? The "Anti-Magnetic" inscription is gone, the "Swiss Made" is in the wrong place and done with a shoddy, fuzzy font. Sorry for the fest of brutal truth that I'm about to deliver, but I have no habit of being euphemistic. If the original finishing and printing is dead and buried, that's when one can play the necromancer. Next time.just don't bring back to life what isn't dead yet. I've no idea how does patina get in the way of everyday use?! Or, for that matter, how exactly was that "bringing it back to life." Never mind, looks as dead now as dead gets. It's what has been done after the original dial was destroyed. The original dial had a heavy, but nice patina, but it's not having it sent to Fiddler's Green that grinds my gears. But that dial repaint job is complete and utter vandalism. "Concerned?" Concerned? The hands, given the incorrect hour hand that it had, were due for a swap alright. Meanwhile, the bigger one from 1956 (yes, that's the year the serial dates it to). Please see our Shipping Policy for more information. The relume job on the smaller one is more than decent.
